Website Popularity

Web Site Popularity?

Website popularity is actually different on different search engines. Neat, huh? Some award higher ranking based upon the traffic your site generates (hits) and others based upon how many (relevant) websites have links to your site.

Our discussion here will be mainly around the value and acquisition of links from other relevant websites to your site. A popular site is a site with many links to it, but most require a reciprocal link back to their website, so you'll need to develop that page(s) in order to secure good links.

Why are links to you important?

Because good Website popularity can dramatically increase traffic to your web site, (which is the reason we do not discuss traffic. If you have many links to you, you will generate additional traffic and then be automatically rewarded for it on those engines that rank in that fashion). Additionally, well placed links are an excellent source of consistent and targeted traffic. And due to recent developments, they can even generate additional search engine traffic to your site.

How can I determine the popularity of my site or another site?

Each engine has a different process. Try it out here.

AltaVista
Type into search box: link:yourdomain.com

This will give you all of the pages which link to you.
Search Engine News

Webcrawler

Type into search box: http://www.yourdomain.com

Webcrawler may ask you what you want to do with this URL. Click on "Search for web pages containing the URL in the text." It will give you a general estimate of how many pages are linking to you and also tell you how many of your pages are listed in this engine.

Side Note -

There is no conclusive evidence of the effectiveness of 'popularity'. Popularity on a couple of engines is (supposedly) determined by your site traffic volume (see next). On other engines it's the number of 'relative' links you have coming to your site.

How does link popularity affect my rank in search engines?

Link popularity is an important factor in how you rank in: Infoseek, AltaVista, Excite, Hotbot, Webcrawler, Lycos, and Northern Lights. It is very important in Infoseek and AltaVista. How important it becomes is up to the way the search engine "tunes" its indexing process.

Your Website popularity will vary from engine to engine because each engine indexes different sites and different pages from sites. A link to your site must be on a page which has been indexed by the search engine in question in order for it to be considered in the popularity factor.
